It’s a totally hand-built, premium-quality masterpiece that packs 510 horsepower and copius slabs of carbon fiber in the body – The asking price is $500,000. With cars like this on the road, Italy might be able to solve its debt crisis with speeding ticket fines.

Now they’re releasing a 5-door model that looks like a Dodge Viper with room for the kids and a dog. But there’s no overblown V-10 engine in this machine, just a gentle electric whir from under the hood. Yes, it’s more than a Prius, and that’s the point exactly.

The forthcoming Cadillac ELR is proof that sometimes concept cars actually make the cut. In ’09 it was an auto show sensation as the “Converj”: futuristic and full of potential. Now, as the ELR, this American-made extended-range hybrid is slated for production.
